Start of The Turf

It has been a positive start to the 2025 turf season for the yard even though it has not been a winning one.

It kicked of when Curious Rover ran a stormer at the first Musselburgh meeting of the season finishing 2nd in the feature race under Jason Hart. His owners at URSA Major Racing had a great day and he will head back to the same track at the first meeting in May.

The Star girls have made a great start to 2025 with a great run from Clasina - 4th at Musselburgh, Sacred Falls - 3rd at Catterick and Epidavros - 5th at Southwell. All 3 galloped through the line strongly and look set for a positive season. Epidavros heads to Musselburgh this Saturday, Sacred Falls has an entry at Catterick next Wednesday and Clasina has some options open at the turn of the month. Exciting start to the season for this lovely bunch of fillies.

Sacred Falls at Catterick

A highlight of the start of the season has to be Gweedore’s 2nd in the 50k Sunday Series race at Musselburgh under Jason. Gweedore has been a super star for us and his owners Lamont Racing since he joined the yard 6 years ago. He missed last season due to a niggling injury and it is always a tricky task bringing horses back to the track after an injury enforced break, especially to the level that Gweedore performs at. Last Sunday he showed us that he retains a lot of ability and hopefully he can build on that throughout this summer. A huge well done to all his owners, our Veterinary team at Rowley Mile Equine and all the team here, especially Abby for getting him back to this stage. He also heads to Musselburgh this Saturday.

As mentioned above Gweedore and Epidavros both head to Musselburgh on Saturday, slightly further afield we send Baby Rover to Wolverhampton to round out our trio of runners this weekend.

The start of the turf season also signalled the end of my winter column in The Racing and Football Outlook newspaper which I have now done for 4 winters. When I started this column we had more jumpers than flat horses in the yard and Covid was keeping us locked indoors, it is amazing how time passes and things change. Not sure if we will be back at it next winter but it is something that I enjoy doing every week with Editor Nick who keeps me right!
